Do the people you lead treat you like you're their mother?

Or the mother they wish they had?

Mothers are our first leaders. We learn what leadership looks like by watching them. 

As their daughters, we carry a mix of gratitude, judgment, and disappointment (if not outrage) for how sexism showed up on them, how they treated us, and for the internalized sexism they passed down.

We crafted our own leadership style either by mimicking or acting the complete opposite of what we experienced and observed.

Depending how much we've conformed to the limits the larger society puts on us, we've been rewarded or punished for what we've figured out. (As female leaders we can either be "likeable" or "competent" but not both.)

And then there's our own relationships with other female leaders.

Have you looked to female leaders and mentors in your career as mother substitutes? Or do you notice feeling similarly to these female leaders as you do toward your mother?

Working on our relationships with our mothers is essential for any effective female leader.

This is why we've decided to host our first ever women's leadership retreat in Nayarit, Mexico in honor of LJIST's 30th anniversary!

This program is designed to support female leaders to heal past wounds, build authentic sisterhood, and unleash lasting change. 

  • Affirm and celebrate the vital role women play in every aspect of human life.

  • Break free from internal and external barriers that limit your leadership.

  • Dive deep into your relationship with your first leader, your mother, and uncover how this connection continues to shape your leadership journey.

  • Learn a powerful practice for healing the impacts of sexism and its intersections with racism, genocide, imperialism, and other oppressions.

  • Develop fresh perspectives and meaningful connections between your leadership, motherhood, and reproduction—whether or not you are a mother.

  • Experience a supportive sisterhood founded on authenticity and liberation.

  • Leave renewed in your leadership by the radical power of rest, reclaiming girlhood joy, and unstructured time.

Lodging & Accommodations

Surrounded by tropical jungle on three sides, Mar de Jade sits on the shores of Playa Chacala. This small Mexican fishing village both retains a traditional way of life and offers contemporary recreational activities. 

Participants are required to book their accommodations directly with Mar de Jade and can choose from single or double accommodations and a variety of room types, as availability permits.

Each rate is per person and includes seven nights accommodations, three buffet-style meals per day, and taxes. The rate does not include: specialty drinks, spa treatments, excursions, transportation and/or gratuities. Ground transportation can be arranged with Mar de Jade staff upon booking. An additional person can be added to the double room rate, increasing the total room cost by $800/additional person.

When Melissa and I scheduled our Transforming Female Leadership Program for spring 2024, I didn't realize how timely in my own life and leadership journey this would be.

Since my mother’s passing this September, it seems even more fitting to mark LJIST's 30th anniversary in Mexico. Mexico is where my mother’s mother Rita de Luna, mi abuelita, and one of the namesakes of my organization, was born and raised.

I'm a speaker, author, coach, and facilitator who has committed my life to ending oppression through personal healing. 

I've committed to my own healing for more than 30 years to be a transformative guide, heart-centered listener, and authentic companion for leaders and change-makers committed to racial healing and social justice.

As Vice President at the Luna Jiménez Institute for Social Transformation, I am especially passionate about work to heal from the effects of internalized sexism and its intersections with other forms of oppression.

I've led hundreds of women to examine the impacts of sexism and male domination on their lives, relationships, and leadership. 

I'm engaged in a body of healing work to authentically show the impacts of sexism on me as I build more intimate relationships with females of all backgrounds. Together we can take bolder leadership outside the limits society has tried to put on us and transform all aspects of our lives.
