Stopping the Cycle of Oppression Virtual Workshop

STOPPING THE CYCLE OF OPPRESSION: How Our Early Hurts Perpetuate Injustice

Tuesday, April 11 - Thursday, April 13, 2023

10:00 am – 1:00 pm Pacific Each Day

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

No person is born agreeing to oppress others or be oppressed. Young people have an innate sense of justice. We entered the world clear about our significance and ability to make things go well. It takes the systematic mistreatment of young people for us to doubt our goodness, thinking, or power to ensure justice for all. To interrupt the cycle of oppression we will need to recognize how we were hurt and commit to heal from internalized messages of discouragement, helplessness, or powerlessness. Giving up, waiting, or resentfully going it alone are no longer our only options. When we reconnect to our inherent human capacity to heal, we can and will stop the cycle of oppression.

WORKSHOP DESIRED OUTCOMES

  • Understood how young people’s oppression and its effects leave us vulnerable to perpetuating the cycle of oppression
  • Begun to recognize what our patterned responses to unhealed hurts are and how these patterns don’t take away from our innate human goodness
  • Learned a theory of change that describes our human healing process
  • Experienced the power of healing in community using LJIST’s core listening practice
  • Deepened understanding of LJIST’s core theory of social transformation and its application to ending racism
PARTICIPANT COMMITMENTS
  • Attend the workshop in its entirety: all three hours on all three days of the workshop.
  • Complete approximately 2-3 hours of pre-work: watching short videos, reviewing handouts, completing reflections, printing or downloading workshop worksheets. This pre-work will be shared no later than 10 days before the workshop begins.
  • Complete approximately 30 minutes of homework on the first and second days of the workshop.
  • Cameras On: LJIST requires that participants have camera and microphone capabilities to attend LJIST virtual sessions. We will build an intimate space together and having our videos on builds trust and allows participants to be vulnerable with one another and the LJIST team.
  • Private Space: We ask all participants to come prepared to mutually hold the confidentiality of what will be shared in our session together. We ask participants to not be driving or in shared spaces with people not registered for the session except in the case of emergencies. We also ask that you do not share the Zoom link with others.
  • Agree to our LJIST Limited Media and Liability Waiver in the registration form.
  • Complete the Highly Recommended Pre-Requisite (if you haven't before): Attend the 3-Hour Getting Listened To session on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm Pacific. (Free with your workshop registration!)
